Interviewing Tips

Interviewing Tips

You've created an outstanding resume, you've worked with your recruiter to target the best opportunities, and now you've landed an interview. The stakes are high and you want to make a great impression. SVS takes a personal stake in your future, and has put together some basic tips for interviewing success:

  1. Get the basics right, such as appropriate attire, shined shoes, and a neat, clean appearance. This sounds obvious, but according to a recent CareerBuilder survey, 69% of hiring managers cite dressing inappropriately as a top interviewing mistake.
  2. Be friendly, positive, and enthusiastic. Don't underestimate the power of attitude. It's human nature to like and admire positive, personable people; this won't get you the job, but it will lay the groundwork for a constructive and thoughtful discussion. Avoid answering a cell phone or text during the interview, appearing disinterested or arrogant, or speaking negatively about a current or past employer.
  3. Prepare, prepare, prepare, by writing down the questions your interviewer might ask and then brainstorming your answers on paper. Review and practice out loud to keep details fresh in your mind and build your confidence. Research the company, and if possible, the specific team, department, or division, so you understand the company's strategy and your prospective role in it.
  4. Provide specific answers to questions, using examples and detail from your career history to illustrate your points and demonstrate your strengths. If you have skewed your resume toward relevant accomplishments, it will act as a roadmap for the interview, and tee you up to highlight your best professional moments.
  5. Be professional and honest. While personal topics may come up during an interview, and might offer connection with the interviewer, maintain primary focus on selling yourself as a professional. Be honest about your experience, talents, and skills, while also using the time to put your best foot forward.
